Description

I had a chance to finally process some data I captured for Gassendi crater a few months ago. On this evening the seeing conditions were quite good and the moon was high in the sky, so the data was of fairly good quality. This image is a 3 panel mosaic, with 3500 frames stacked for each panel (out of 10000 total captured). A portion of Mare Humorum can be seen to the lower left.

It was tricky to figure out exactly how to process this data, since the there are large gradients in brightness across the surface. In earlier versions of this, I tried to push the contrast a bit, but the result looked artificial. In the end, I decided to stay with the more subtle approach. In fact, I can't think of an occasion where I've regretted posting a version of an image with more conservative processing!

In case it would be of interest, here are the camera settings I used for this data:

ASI ZWO ASI178MM-Cool
ROI dimensions: 3096 x 2080
frames: 10000
pixel depth: 8 bit/pixel
fps: 30.17
gain: 310.00
exp: 3.60 ms

Looking forward to capturing some planetary images over the next few months!
